Auger Types & Configurations for Every Product Profile
Matching the Helix to Your Product’s Behavior:
Selecting the correct auger geometry is the first and most critical step in ensuring dosing success. A one-size-fits-all approach leads to inaccuracy and downtime. Locus Robotics provides a comprehensive range of auger designs, each engineered to handle specific product characteristics.
Single Auger with Constant Pitch: The standard for a vast majority of free-flowing to semi-cohesive powders and granules like sugar, salt, spices, and ground coffee. Its consistent helix provides a stable, predictable flow.
Single Auger with Variable Pitch: A specialized solution for highly cohesive, compacting, or fluffy products (e.g., flour, powdered milk, titanium dioxide). The changing pitch along the screw’s length helps break product bridges, ensures consistent packing in the flight, and improves dosing uniformity.
Twin (Parallel) Augers: The ultimate solution for extremely cohesive, sticky, or low-bulk-density products like cake mixes, certain spices, and fibrous materials. The two intermeshing screws create a positive pumping action, eliminating the central «dead zone» and ensuring a consistent, non-pulsing discharge. This design dramatically improves accuracy for challenging products.
Paddle Augers: Designed for delicate, flaky, or leafy products (e.g., breakfast cereal flakes, instant noodles, herbs) where a standard screw would cause excessive breakage. The paddles gently propel the product without crushing.
Ribbon Augers: Used primarily in continuous mixing or feeding applications rather than precision dosing, but available for specific hopper agitation needs to maintain product flow.
This precise matching of auger type to product is the result of our application engineering process, which often involves testing your product samples in our lab to determine the optimal configuration.
Precision Engineering & Control Systems
From Simple Rotation to Intelligent Metering:
The physical auger is only part of the system. The true precision is delivered by the advanced drive and control technology that governs its every revolution.
Servo Motor-Driven Systems: The industry standard for high accuracy. A closed-loop servo motor coupled with a high-resolution encoder allows for precise control over the auger’s rotation down to a fraction of a degree. This enables micro-dropping techniques for final accuracy adjustment and allows the system to store hundreds of product recipes (dose weight, speed, trickle parameters) that can be recalled instantly.
Weight Feedback Control (Gravimetric Dosing): For the highest possible accuracy (often ±0.5%), systems can be equipped with an integrated load cell. The doser operates in a «dribble-fill» mode: a bulk charge is dispensed quickly, then the auger slows to a trickle, stopping precisely when the target weight on the scale is reached. This compensates for any minor variation in product bulk density in real-time.
Hygienic & Robust Design: All product contact parts are manufactured from AISI 304 or 316L stainless steel, with polished surfaces (Ra <0.8µm) to prevent product adhesion and facilitate cleaning. Seals are FDA-compliant, and designs allow for quick disassembly without tools for changeover or deep cleaning—a critical feature for food and pharmaceutical applications following GMP and HACCP protocols.
Dust Containment & Safety: Our dosers are designed with integral dust skirts, sealed bearings, and optional CIP (Clean-in-Place) ports to contain fine particles, protecting both the product and the operator’s work environment. For explosive dust applications (ATEX), we offer correspondingly rated motors and control systems.
This integration of mechanical design with intelligent electronics transforms a simple screw into a reliable, data-generating metering asset for your smart factory.
Integration & Customized Feeding Solutions
Creating a Seamless Product Flow Ecosystem:
An auger doser cannot perform consistently without a stable, reliable supply of product. We engineer complete feeding systems to eliminate upstream bottlenecks that cause fill weight variation.
Integrated Feed Systems: To ensure a constant head of product in the doser’s hopper—vital for consistent packing and accuracy—we supply auxiliary equipment such as horizontal screw conveyors, vibratory tray feeders, and rotary feed valves. These can be controlled by level sensors in the main hopper to automate refill cycles.
Custom Hoppers & Agitation: Product-specific hopper designs with integrated vibrators, mechanical paddles, or fluidizing pads prevent arching and ratholing of cohesive powders. For ultra-hygienic applications, hoppers can feature polished interiors, large-radius corners, and easy-access clean-out doors.
Multi-Head & Multi-Product Systems: For high-speed lines, we configure multiple auger dosing heads on a single frame, all driven from a central control system. For packaging lines running different but similar products (e.g., various spice blends), we offer quick-swap auger/hopper assemblies or systems with divertor valves feeding a single doser from multiple source hoppers.
Special Applications:
Liquid & Paste Addition: Auger systems can be configured with special coated screws and barrels to handle viscous pastes, greases, and semi-solid products where a piston pump may not be suitable.
Dual-Filling (Liquid & Powder): For products like instant soup or cement mix, a single machine can be equipped with both an auger doser for powder and a piston pump for liquid oil or flavoring, filling separate compartments of a multi-laminate pouch.
This holistic approach to system design guarantees that your precision dosing investment delivers its promised performance on the factory floor, day in and day out.
